Penggunaan internet dalam kalangan warga emas bandar
Muhammad Zaiamri Zainal Abidin1.
This article surveys internet use amongst older adults, and examining challenges
that they face and motivitation for using the internet. The study employs a mixed
method research design combining survey questionnaires and in depth interviews.
The survey examined patterns of internet use among 1108 urban older adults. In
depth interviews explored their views and lived experiences with regards use of
media and technology. Survey results found low rates of internet access and internet
use among older adults. Interview data suggests this may due to challenges faced
by older adults, such as physical and cognitive decline, fear of technology, as
well as negative perceptions and confusion regarding new media. Nevertheless,
among those respondents who did use the internet, encouragement from family
members plays an important role aiding older adults to adapt to using the internet
for communication and information seeking.
