Syamsul Anuar Ismail1, Hasmah Zanuddin2.
This study measured the Malaysian blogging activities within the political online public sphere before and after the last election. Three Malaysian sosio-politics blogs were chosen in this study, that is by Datuk Abdul Kadir Jasin (The Scribe A Kadir Jasin), Ahirudin Attan (Rocky's Bru), and Datuk Ruhanie Ahmad (Kudakepang). The blogs were chosen using Alexa.com and Technorati.com search engine based on the count of traffics and the amount of blogs linked. The blogs were content analysed. Result of the study shows an increment of blog activities after the election compared to before the dissolution of parliament announcement on 13 February 2008. The study also found out that blog readers were more proactive to give comments and express their thought more on political issues compared to socio-economics issues. Overall, this study shows that blogs were gaining popularity and successful in creating a public sphere. Blogs injected a new dimension of public space and created a political awareness among Malaysian internet users. Blogs usage were not limited to informations searching solely but empowered them to voice out and discuss online issues that matters to the public.
