Kajian sikap dan persepsi terhadap pembelajaran bahasa mandarin dalam kalangan pelajar UiTM Kelantan

The objective of this study is to investigate UiTM Kelantan students’ attitudes and perceptions towards learning Mandarin as a third language. A qualitative research design was utilized in this study. The data were collected using a set of questionnaire. A total of 36 students were involved in the qualitative study to give their personal experiences and opinions which were then deliberated through content analysis. This study was conducted based on the Socioeducational Model presented by Gardner. The study found that the respondents showed positive attitudes towards Mandarin language learning since they exercised both the positive integrative and instrumental orientations. However, both male and female students showed difficulties in mastering Chinese characters, tones and vocabularies. Nevertheless, their positive thinking and curiosity about learning new things encouraged them in learning Mandarin. They also believed that learning and mastering the Mandarin Language could benefit them in the future. In conclusion, students taking Mandarin language courses in UiTM Kelantan show positive attitudes towards learning Mandarin language and are motivated to learn Mandarin.
