There has been growing concern on the currentAcetes fishing gears used by local fishermen
which disregard the ecosystem and resource sustainability. Apparently, this issue has been the main subject for management regulation. Therefore, it is important to improvise the fishing gears to be economically viable and resource-friendly for Acetes. Recently, a research has been done in Miri waters in 2016 to determine the most efficient and, resource and environmentally-friendly gears for catching Acetes by using Songkor, Lengkong, Sobor, Ancau and Pakak Tunda. The results show that Songkor managed to catch 6.5 kg/fisherman/hour of Acetes, meanwhile Lengkong about 600 kg/haul, Sobor 80 kg/hour, Ancau 36 kg/hour and finally, Pakak Tunda have an average total catch of 90 kg/hr. In addition, it was observed that Ancau has the most by-catch species about 25% and the least by-catch was observed in Lengkong and Sobor gear, about 10% of by-catch composition. The results of the study proposed that only Songkor, Lengkong, Sobor
and Ancau is recommended to be used for Acetes fishing and are suggested to be listed under the traditional gear for ZONE A License. However, Pakak Tunda (beam trawl) should be prohibited to be used for Acetes fishing in Sarawak.
