This article examines the ideological dimension in Pengertian, a novel by S. Othman Kelantan. Through the perspectives of cultural studies, post-colonialism and feminism, this novel presents power as hegemony. The first element of hegemony is represented by the dominance of male over female that places this work into a patriachial discourse. The second element is urban over rural setting as an analogy to colonialisme or specifically cultural colonialism. The men and the urban citizens controlling the power are sitting in a central point while the women and the rural citizens are the marginal people or the subaltern group. As a cultural text, this novel incorporates a relationship moden through binary conflict.
