This article is about the beginning and the development of modern Malay poetry in Malay Archipelago. It stresses on the comparison between Indonesian poetry and Malaysian poetry. Indonesia has achieved the artistic form and style as early as 1930s through Amir Hamzah, and Malaysia attained this achievement only in 1970s through Muhammad Haji Salleh. From then onwards, the development and the standard of the poetry writing in both countries are parallel.
