Maszuraini Miswan1, Hamedi Mohd Adnan2.
This paper discusses the development of mobile application (app) to improve
children’s literacy skills, based on the Malaysian Ministry of Education’s Literacy
and Numeracy Screening (LINUS) screening program. The app, named Literasi
LINUS, or LiLIN, was designed in the context of educational media for children
and a cognitive apprentice pedagogical approach. By using Adobe Photoshop and
Kwiksher software in development process, this application makes full use of all
the advantages of the iOS platform, as well as the iPad capacities. The key of LiLIN
application’s features include: learning the syllables and words spelling in interactive
multimedia and multi-touch ways-response automatically to right or wrong answer,
integrate spelling audio for alphabets and syllables, spelling and writing practices,
and the game-like approach for active and collaborative learning. The presentation
of every lesson is based on short stories with illustrations and background music as
well. As an educational tool, LiLIN was designed to enhance collaborative learning as
well. The analysis, design and development process involved in the development of
LiLIN is presented and analyzed in this paper based on an approach called Analysis,
Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation (ADDIE).
