SARE: Southeast Asian Review of English is a peer-reviewed international journal founded in 1980.
Writing in the inaugural issue, its founding editor, Lloyd Fernando, the first Malaysian Professor of English and Head then of the only Department of English in the country, declared that while SARE "will be a specialist journal" covering "an already diverse and still expanding area of literary, cultural and social interest: Malaysian and Singaporean literature in English through Commonwealth literature to Third World literature in English ... it won't be a journal of a jealously and zealously delimited specialism".
Thirty-five years and beyond, SARE is still faithful to those generous founding principles. It continues to be committed to its originating vision of promoting scholarship that transcends the boundaries of established canons and cultures, while being especially attentive to texts and constituencies that occupy the margins of nations. A pioneer in the literary and academic scene of Southeast Asia at the time of its launch, SARE now serves a global community of scholars and writers as an online journal that is freely and always available. Derived initially from the activities of the Malaysian Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies (MACLALS), it is now produced by the Department of English of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Universiti Malaya.
SARE particularly welcomes papers that explore diasporic and postcolonial interventions (new ethnicities, alternative cultural practices and lines of resistance) in the literatures and cultures of Southeast, South and East Asia, as well as other theoretically-informed articles on the languages and literatures in and of these regions.
In addition to promoting scholarship on a variety of genres such as literary fiction, drama, poetry, and media, including film and visual arts, popular culture, performance and other cultural texts and practices, SARE also seeks to publish:
- Special issues with a particular thematic or regional focus
- Interviews with regional writers and theorists
- Reviews of recently-published literary and cultural criticism by scholars of or based in the Global South as well as reviews of novels and poetry of writers of the region
- A selection of creative writing in the form of original poems and short prose fiction by established, emerging and previously unpublished writers

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

SARE invites submissions that fall within the "Aims and Scope" of the journal, as outlined in the "About SARE" page.
Scholarly articles and interviews should be about 6000 words in length and should not normally exceed 8000 words. Creative pieces should not exceed 6000 words for prose and fiction, and 3 pages for poetry. Book Reviews should be between 1000 and 1200 words in length.
The author's name, institutional affiliation and mailing addresses (email and postal) should be given on the title page of the manuscript only to facilitate blind reviewing. Manuscripts should be double-spaced on A4 sized paper with margins of 1.25" on both the right and left side of the page and 1" on the top and bottom of the page. Each paragraph should be indented. Spelling should follow the Oxford English Dictionary. Double quotes with single quotes within should be used, whilst passages of more than 50 words should be indented. Notes, if used, should be placed at the end of the article, consecutively numbered in Arabic numerals (i.e. 1, 2, 3 etc.), and listed under "Notes" before "Works Cited".
All quotations in the main text should consistently be in double quotation marks. Titles of books and plays should be italicised throughout, while titles of poems, articles and short stories should be in double quotation marks. References should be parenthetical, and the "Works Cited" will list full bibliographical references. SARE asks contributors to observe the Modern Language Association Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (MLA) convention. Full details can be found at http://www.mla.org/.
Contributors should also include a brief abstract of between 150 and 250 words for each critical article and a synopsis of about 150 words for each piece of creative prose. This should be followed by a maximum of 6 key words in the article, and a brief biographical statement of the author (85 words maximum).
Only work that has not been previously published or has not been sent for consideration for publication elsewhere should be submitted. Authors undertake to pay any copyright fee incurred in the use of material already protected by copyright.

BOOK REVIEW
- SARE only accepts reviews of books (including novels and short story and poetry collections) that are not more than two years old. Thematic reviews of multiple books in the same subject area and review essays that place books in conversation with one another are also welcome.
- Length of reviews: 1000 to 1200 words.
- Length of book review essays: 1500 to 2000 words.
